Stolen Innocence: The Tragedy of Child Kidnapping

Children are not merely smaller versions of adults waiting to grow into significance. In Scripture, they are portrayed as precious gifts entrusted by God, bearers of His image and recipients of His special affection. Though they have been entrusted into humanity’s care, they are fiercely loved by their Creator who promises to defend and fight for them.

Jesus welcomed, blessed and held them up as examples of the humility and trust that characterize the kingdom of God. Their value does not lie in what they can become, but in who they already are before God. They occupy a unique place in the heart of the Father who hears their cries, delights in their presence and fiercely guards their dignity. To care for children is therefore to align oneself with God’s own concern, while to harm them is to wound those whom He treasures.
Children represent hope, potential and the promise of a better tomorrow. Since they are still young and do not legislate for themselves, they depend on adults and institutions for protection and guidance. When God declares that children are “borne for Me” (Ezekiel 16:20-21), He establishes a divine claim upon their lives. Consequently, an attack on children is not merely an offense against the innocent, it is a direct affront to God who created them, cherished them and has pledged Himself as their defender.

For parents and guardians, the experience of having a child kidnapped is a nightmare beyond words. Jeremiah 31:15 captures the grief and anguish of parents separated from their children: “Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted because they are no more.” The uncertainty of not knowing where a child is, whether they are safe or if they will ever return home creates serious emotional pain. Families often spend sleepless nights praying, searching and hoping for good news.

When criminals and terrorist groups target children, they attack not only individual families but also the very foundation of society. In many cases, communities share in this pain, demonstrating that the loss of one child affects everyone. The emotional and psychological impact of kidnapping can remain with victims for many years. Many rescued children struggle with fear, anxiety and trauma long after they return home.

So when children are kidnapped and in school, it is more than a security challenge. It is a moral crisis that demands urgent attention. Every child deserves the freedom to, play and grow without fear. As a society, we must refuse to become indifferent to this tragedy. Through collective action, compassion and commitment to justice, we can work toward a future where every child is safe and every family can live without the shadow of abduction hanging over their lives.

Schools are places of learning and growth and must not be allowed to be turned into hunting grounds for criminals or terrorist groups. Attacks on schools create an atmosphere of fear that discourage education. Parents become reluctant to send their children to school, while students struggle to concentrate on learning when they fear for their safety. The long-term effect is a generation whose education and development are disrupted by insecurity.

Defending the Little Ones: A Call to Action

The agony of kidnapped children and their families should move people of faith to pray, advocate for justice and support efforts aimed at protecting and rescuing them. Kidnapped children deserve our love, care, respect, protection, compassion and justice.

The church, civil society organisations and community leaders all have important roles to play. They can provide emotional support to affected families, advocate for better protection measures and promote values that respect the dignity and worth of every child. Education on child safety should also be encouraged so that children and parents understand how to reduce risks and respond to threats.

As we confront the painful reality of child kidnapping, we must not surrender to fear or despair. To parents and guardians whose children have been taken captive by terrorists, the LORD says:
“I will contend with those who contend with you, and your children I will save.” – Isaiah 49:25
God does not treat offenses against children lightly, but warns against harming them in Matthew 18:6:
“If anyone causes one of these little ones – those who believe in me – to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.”
