Peace sat quietly on the wooden bench, her small fingers tracing invisible patterns as the evening sun stretched across the compound. She had been unusually silent all day.
Auntie Jane,” she finally said, her voice soft but searching, “can I ask you something?”
Auntie Jane looked up from the book she was reading and smiled. “Of course, Peace. What is it?”
Peace hesitated, then asked the question that had been weighing on her heart:
“But did Jesus have to die?”
Auntie Jane paused. It was not just a child’s question – it was a question many adults still wrestle with. She closed her book gently and motioned for Peace to come closer.
“You know how sometimes,” she began, “someone does something wrong and there are consequences?”
Peace nodded slowly.
“Well,” Auntie Jane continued, “the story of Jesus is about love so deep that He chose to take those consequences for everyone else. Not because he had to, but because He loved us that much.”
Peace frowned slightly. “So… He chose to die?”
“Yes,” Auntie Jane said softly. “But that’s not the end of the story.”
Peace’s eyes lifted with curiosity.
Jesus Rose Again!
“He rose again,” Auntie Jane added, her voice warm with hope. “And that’s what Easter is really about – love that gives and life that comes back stronger.”
Peace leaned her head against Auntie Jane’s arm, her question not fully answered, but her heart somehow lighter.
“Tell me the full story,” she whispered.
And so, Auntie Jane began …
“Long ago, in a land full of dusty roads and bright skies, there was a man named Jesus. He was kind – so kind that people followed Him wherever He went. He healed the sick, comforted the sad and told everyone about God’s love. But not everyone understood Him. Some people were afraid of His goodness and the truth he spoke. And so, one very sad day, Jesus was taken away and put on the cross.”
Peace shuddered when Auntie Jane got to the part where Jesus was put on the cross. Auntie Jane paused for a moment, then continued.
“His friends felt confused and heartbroken. It seemed like the light had gone out of their world. They laid His body in a tomb, a cave sealed with a heavy stone. For a while, everything felt dark… like when the night is longest and you wonder if morning will ever come. But then – early on the third day – something amazing happened.”
Peace’s eyes widened and she leaned in a little closer. “What happened?” she whispered, her voice full of wonder.
Auntie Jane replied.
“The stone was rolled away. The tomb was empty. Jesus was alive. His friends couldn’t believe it at first, but then they saw Him, spoke with Him and their sadness turned into joy brighter than the sun. It was the greatest surprise – the greatest hope anyone had ever known.”
“And do you know what that means?” Auntie Jane asked. Peace shook her head slowly. “I don’t know,” she admitted, looking at Auntie Jane with expectation.
Auntie Jane answered, “It means that even when things feel dark or broken, God can bring light and life again. Easter is the reminder that love is stronger than anything – even death.” And that kind of love? It’s for you too.”
Auntie Jane continued, smiling warmly, “Easter is a special time for Christians. It reminds us of love and new beginnings. It tells the story of Jesus Christ, who died and then came back to life. Jesus died on the cross because He loves us very much. He chose to take the punishment for our wrong choices so we could be forgiven and be close to God again. His story shows us how much God loves and cares for us.”
Peace hugged her knees, thinking it over. “I see now… He had to die because He loves us so much.”
As we reflect on the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ, may this Easter remind us that no situation is beyond renewal and no heart is beyond God’s reach. His resurrection is a promise of new beginnings for us all.
Take a moment today to reflect - what does this message of love and hope mean to you personally? I’d love to hear your thoughts and reflections - feel free to share in the comments.
May your heart be filled with peace, joy, and the courage to embrace a new beginning.
